Materials We Cannot Engrave

At Precision Lighthouse, safety is one of our top priorities—not just for our team, but for our customers and the environment. While laser engraving opens up a world of possibilities, some materials can pose serious health risks or even damage our equipment when exposed to the laser. We want to keep you informed on what’s safe and why some materials are off-limits.

Why Certain Materials Aren’t Safe

When materials are hit by a laser, they release fumes, dust, or gases. For most materials, these byproducts are minimal or harmless. But certain materials can release toxic chemicals when engraved, which can be harmful to breathe in, damaging to our machines, or harmful to the environment.

Materials We Cannot Engrave

PVC (Polyvinyl Chloride): This common plastic is found in items like vinyl and some plastics. When engraved, it releases chlorine gas, which is not only harmful to humans but can also corrode the machinery. The risks far outweigh the rewards.

Fiberglass: Made from glass fibers and resin, fiberglass can break down into fine, hazardous particles when exposed to a laser. These particles are dangerous to inhale and can pose significant health risks over time.

Coated Carbon Fiber: While pure carbon fiber can be engraved, any coating on it can release toxic fumes. It’s best to avoid engraving carbon fiber materials unless they are specifically safe for laser use.

Certain Foams: Many types of foam contain chemical compounds that, when exposed to a laser, emit harmful fumes. It’s always best to check with us before attempting to engrave any foam-based materials.

Unknown Plastics: Not all plastics are created equal, and if we don’t know exactly what type it is, it’s best not to risk it. Some plastics may release toxic or corrosive gases similar to PVC.

Mirrors: Reflective surfaces like mirrors can be dangerous to engrave because the laser beam can reflect back into the machine, potentially causing damage to the equipment or creating a safety hazard. For this reason, mirrors are best left off the list of engravable items.

Final Thoughts

While these restrictions may limit a few options, there are still countless safe and creative materials we can work with, from woods to coated metals and more. Always feel free to reach out with questions about specific materials.

At Precision Lighthouse, our safety and your satisfaction come first. By staying mindful of the materials we work with, we can continue creating stunning, safe engravings for everyone.
